I'll Be In Bavaria For A Month, Where Should I Go?

I’m heading to Germany today to see my family, much of which lives in the Nuernberg or Munich area. Of course, I’ll be searching for cool nuggets of car culture that could make for good stories. Where should I go?

I usually fly to Germany at least once a year, as my dad works on a military base near Nuernberg, and my mom’s side of the family lives near Munich. Naturally, every time I go, I’m always keeping an eye out for cool car stuff.

There are plenty of high-profile, awesome places in Germany that every car enthusiast has to see, like the Nuerburgring and the !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! . And while those are awesome, I’d really like to get a closer look at grassroots car culture in Germany— stuff that’s maybe not so obvious to anyone who doesn’t actually live there. Car shows, races, swap meets, a guy named Guenter wrenching on his Trabi— anything like that.

Feel free to hit me with suggestions, and if you live in Bavaria—especially if you need a hand wrenching— haller at me. I’ll wrench into the night in exchange for delicious Rahmschnitzel.

Sinsheim, the Mercedes Benz museum and the BMW World are obvious destinations but there’s the Frankfurt Klassikstadt which I haven’t been to unfortunately. Amerang car museum at the Chiemsee seems to be alright, if Mazdas are your thing the only Mazda museum in Germany will open next month in Augsburg I believe.

That’s the best I can come up with, even though I’m located in Bavaria.

Rammstein AFB so you can see my cousin’s two 911s. One is a 85 SC Convertible (the blue roof), the other is a 2014 911 991.1 50th Anniversary.

Kinja'd!!!

And yes, his other AF buddy owns a Charger Hellcat in Germany.

But other than that, PORSCHE MUSEUM.

If you want to get some driving done: the Autobahn from Munich to Garmisch is a fun one. Twisties can be found on the Alpenstrasse and surrounding roads, or head south into Austria for the Silvretta Hochalpenstrasse, Hahntennjoch and Grossglockner. If you want to make a weekend out of it, you can cross into Italy via the Timmelsjoch and/or the old Brenner.

While I don’t live in Germany I’m in Munich for a week right now. My daily driver I’ve driven here doesn’t need wrenching though, as it’s an Italian built French coupe of only 16 years old with a mere 280k on the odometer.

I just got back from Germany on Saturday. I spent a week in Stuttgart, my sister and brother-in-law live there. He’s a gov contractor working on several different bases in the area, and supporting other bases throughout Europe.

I went to the Porsche museum and rate that as an absolute must see. I wanted to go to the Mercedes-Benz museum but ran out of time. If you get up early and are thrifty with your time both should be do-able in a day. Clearly I was not this well organized. Both are in Stuttgart, so try to get over there for a day or two.

There’s also a spot in Stuttgart called Motorworld which is an exotic car storage place where people can keep their special cars that they can’t or don’t want to keep at their homes. Except it’s open to the public so you can go in and walk around and look at them. It’s like a permanent Cars ‘n Coffee.

I also went to the Nurburgring, and highly recommend it. My brother-in-law and I did a lap with the BMW Ring Taxi service, which was awesome. I wanted to rent a car and drive it myself but I’m kind of glad I didn’t. The weather was really crappy, and the track was closed for quite a while in the morning, and when it did open they were only letting certain cars out (including the Taxis) which was nice, we got the track essentially to ourselves, but I know our driver also wasn’t driving 10/10ths, or even 9/10ths. And later when they opened the track to more cars, some guy in a BMW laid down a bunch of coolant and/or oil, spun around, and then got hit by a Cayman GT4 that we had parked next to that morning! I thinking driving it would be awesome, and now that I’ve been on the track and done it with a professional, I’d like to try it, as long as the weather is decent. But just riding it was amazing, no video game or even TV really gives you a sense of A) just how much elevation changes B) how crazy some of the turns are, C) how little run off area there is.

Aside from the ‘Ring Taxi ride, we went to the ‘Ring museum, raced go-karts on the indoor track, watched some of the Lamborghini Super Trofeo race that was going on, went to an Sim Racing Expo that was going on, saw an RC Car race, and bought a lot of crap in the gift shop. My biggest regret was not buying the toaster that burns the shape of the Nordschlief into your toast.

Aside from all that, there are a ton of castles to look at. We went to Castle Lichtenstein which was cool, though not very big at all.

Also, looks like you’ll be there for ‘Fest. Have fun and try not to get too F’d up. I ate 2 fest chickens and drank 4.5L of beer.

I think Grand Turismo accurately portrays how little runoff room there is on the Nurburgring. Especially the one time I tried to use my hopped up Viper with “Sport tires” on it. It was just a pinball match from wall to wall, even on the straightaways.
